Tinnitus

Tinnitus is a condition where you experience ringing or noises in the ear or head when there is no external noise present.

Tinnitus is not a disease, but it is a symptom of many conditions that affect the ear.

Almost everything that can go wrong with our ears can produce tinnitus as a symptom.  From something as simple as earwax against the eardrum, or as serious as a tumour on the hearing nerve. Otosclerosis is a form of abnormal bone growth in the middle ear that causes hearing loss and can also produce the symptom of tinnitus and so can Meniere’s disease.  By far, one of the biggest causes of tinnitus is exposure to loud and excessive noise.

Noise destroys!

Many people suffer from tinnitus. Probably as many as 20% of Australians have experienced tinnitus at some point in their lives. About one in five people have what is called bothersome tinnitus, which can be very distressing and negatively affects their quality of life.

The range of tinnitus is very large, from being mild to severe.  Everybody’s tinnitus is unique to them and can be ringing or buzzing, humming or roaring.  Tinnitus can become worse due to stress or tiredness.  It can be a very complicated condition and requires a Specialist to provide tinnitus treatment, in Sydney this is provided by Dr Katzen.

Causes of Tinnitus

One of the preventable causes of tinnitus is excessive noise exposure. In some instances of noise exposure, tinnitus can be noticed even before hearing loss develops. You should take this a warning sign.

Some medications can also damage the inner ear hair cells and cause tinnitus.  These include non-prescription medication such as aspirin if taken in high doses, and prescription medication including some diuretics and antibiotics.  As we age, the incidence of tinnitus increases.

Your tinnitus can sound worse at night. During the day there is often a lot of background noise such as traffic, TV, radio or office noise while you are at work.  At night, when these external sounds are minimal and your brain is not focused on other things, the sounds from tinnitus can become much more bothersome.
